Engine Oil Change Procedure

Step-by-Step Guide

Tools Required:

  • Box end wrench or ratchet and socket for drain plug
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Clean shop rags

Supplies Required:

  • Correct grade and quantity of engine oil
  • Oil filter

Follow the steps below:

  1. Run engine until it reaches operating temperature.
  2. Place oil drain pan under the engine oil drain.
  3. Remove the oil drain plug and allow oil to drain completely.
  4. Reinstall the drain plug with a new gasket or seal.
  5. Remove the oil filter.
  6. Clean the oil filter mounting surface.
  7. Apply clean oil to the new oil filter gasket.
  8. Install the new oil filter on the mount, hand tighten. Do NOT over tighten.
  9. Add the proper amount of oil to the engine at the filling point.
  10. Start the engine and make sure there is adequate oil pressure on the oil pressure gauge.
  11. Let the engine run for 5 minutes.
  12. Stop the engine and check for oil leaks at the drain plug and the oil filter seal area.
  13. Stop the engine and recheck the engine oil level.
  14. Add oil as needed to reach the FULL mark on the dipstick.
  15. Dispose of used oil and oil filter properly.
